Fullmetal Alchemist Anime Review

Fullmetal Alchemist is a popular anime series that began airing in Japan on October 4, 2003. Its based on the early story line of the manga of the same name written and illistrated by Hiromu Arakawa. It follows the story of two brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric who live in a steam punk world similar to Europe during the Industrial Revolution but theirs one major diffrence. The study of physics never took over in thise world, its principles were forgotten and replaced when another science one long forgotten in the real world made major advances and overtook Newtons principles, that Science being Alchemy. The science of combining and manipulating basic elements to create new elements or objects in their place, this science being mostly known in history for its early followers attempting to turn led into gold died with history. Hiromu Arakawa took this concept and created an alternate reality parralel to our own to have the characters exist within, ultimatly creating one of the most colorful and original series in Manga or Anime. All the Alchemist characters live by a principle called Equivalent Exchange, to gain anything of value you must give up something in return of equal value.
The main story arch covers the lifes of Edward and Alphonse after they attempt the most taboo act in their world, human alchemy. There father is absent from their lives and when their mother passes away and leaves them to live on their own, they attempt to do what no alchemist had ever achieved, bring a human beinging back to life. Yet as they plan and set up all the chemical components of the human body and start the process something goes wrong even with their careful calculations. Al's entire body is lost in the process and Ed's leg is torn from his body due to a lack of equivalency in their alchemy. In a split moment decision Ed attempts another alchemic act rarely attempted and even less often achieved, fusing a human soul to an inanimate object. In desperation he offers up his arm for the transmutation(the act of alchemy) and draws a seal to anchor the soul within a suit of armor and looses his arm within the law of equivalent exchange. Al survives but is attached to one of their fathers suits of armor, no physical body, just a empty suit of armor made animate by a soul that gives it substance. Yet as Al comes to and sees Edward, still flesh and blood bleeding, they find what they had created was far from human, the transmutations a seeming failure.
The rest of the story covers the brothers adventurs as they search for a way to return themselves back to normal and deal with the principles of alchemy bring to their world, and the moral ambiguities of chasing the advancment of science through alchemy. The story doubles back on its self several times filling in blanks in the story and constantly keeps adding new characters all of which are interesting and diffrent from the previous. The story will often find itself drifting into questions that are relevent even in the real world if looked at deep enough and really presses the concept that you gain nothing for free and what is really equivalent to a human life. The show grows increasingly darker in tone as the show progresses and as the Elric brothers grow closer to each other and grow more mature realizing the place they find themselves in life. Ultimatly coming to a emtionaly conclusion that is finished up with the film <"Conquerer of Shamballa that should leave most people pretty happy with the conclusion of the series.
The story and characters are one of the strongest parts of the show and either ever really faulters, the world of Fullmetal Alchemist is a strong one with no major problems and remeains relatable and interesting till the very end. The show is story wise a mix of western drama and steampunk mixed with an even amount of science fiction especially in the movie and the later sections of the show. The animation is good but not perfect, the first season of the show comprised of the first 25 or so episodes out of 51 is the most incosistent. At times being excellent then the next being a bit rough around the edges but even so it never gets so bad that the show becomes unenjoyable and thats largerly do the the awesome animators over at Studio Bones. The soundtrack does re-use many of the same tracks but it is usually so well composed and fits the mood of the show that it will never bother you. The show is also filled with a large sum of action to break up the drama and depth that the story can plunge into and all of it is well coregraphed and can be pretty impresive. The abundance of abilities that alchemy can bestow makes sure to keep the action fresh and interesting and gives it a little flair as well. Over all this is a series any one new to anime can pickup and enjoy regardless if their looking for a deep story or a action filled show, either party will be made happy.

Cowboy Bebop Review

Cowboy Bebop is an award-winning 1998 Japanese anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, written by Keiko Nobumoto, and produced by Studio Sunrise. Comprised of 26 episodes completeing a story arch set in 2071. It follows the lives of a group of bounty hunters aka cowboys as they come to terms with their pasts, their presents, and the effects of both and everything in between while living on a space ship named the Bebop. It won numerous awards for animation and was voted the best anime of all time in a american poll during the 90s
Cowboy Bebop was one of the first Anime i initially saw while it was aired on Adult Swim, the nightime block on Cartoon Network. It was also one of the main influences that actually got me interested in anime in th first place, and rightfully so. It is openly reffered to as one of the best series within the genre of Japanese animation due to its compelling story, interesting and believable characters, excellent animation for a television show for the time and still to this day.
The story takes place in a future world only a bit further then our own when mass space travel has begun to take off but is far from perfected. In 2022 a warp gate (the method for planatary travel in the bebop universe) explodes causing catastrophic damage on to the moon leaving debri from the explosion littering the Earths orbit. Which begins to constantly bombard the planet making it almost unihabitable, causing most people to then simply move to colonoies the inner belt of planets and the moons of Jupiter and space stations orbiting these plantes. Leaving the Earth economically dead and home only to the poor and to those unable to let go of the past.
The show however as mentioned does not start until 2071 years later, the demand for space travel has allowed warp gates to become more reliable and are now set up to allow travel throught the entire solar system. Mars becoming the center of human civilization. Crime synicates similar to the Mafia in the chaos after the abandoment of earth have grabbed for themselves a large amount of power influencing every part of the goverment and police. This results in organized crime managemnet being inneffective and a bounty system is created to help deal with crime setting up the career and life style of the crew of the Bebop.
The crew of the Bebop ultimatly consists of Jet Black, Spike Speigel, Fei Valentine, Edward and a Welsh Corgi name Ein. The owner of the Bebop being Jet who had before aquiring the rest of the crew enlisted Spikes help due to his combat ability. The rest of the crew are aquired threw the rest of the series and their presence often serves as a annoyance to both Spike and Jet. By the end of the series the entire cast of characters pasts are explained well and serve to help explain the main idea of the series other then Ed who seemed to be around solely to give the team a computer hacker and a tie to earth. His past never is explained in the detail that the rest of the cast is.
Arguably one of the strongest parts of the shows was its soundtrack which was created in collaboration with two groups by the names of Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts most of the shows music is in English unlike most shows and the genre of music is largerly Rock and Jazz but is almost always fitting to the tone and atmosphere of the show and never gets annoying. They almost never repeat the same tracks over and over so the music never gets a chance to get old, and new tracks are thrown at you each episode to match the theme of each episode. The individual names of some episodes being named after real life songs and others the shows own soundtrack.
This is a very hard show to really review because theirs really not much wrong with it. It is an exceptional show from beginning to end compared to any genre, be it live action or animated. The only problems with the entire series and be it small ones is that many people will find the series to end on a bit of a bumber. Some people will not be bothered by this while other people will hate the way it ends. I personally do not mind a bitter sweet ending because sadly happy endings do not come around very often in reality. It just serves to make the story of Cowboy Bebop be that much more believable. Some of the CGI used in the series does not age all that gracefully and looks a little rough around the edges compared to what were used to seeing now in modern day film and televison.

I personally own the Cowboy Bebop Remix Complete Collection (Anime Legends) set, the video quality is great even on a HD television using an upscaling DVD player. The case is nice and strong and the surround sound is a nice update. This is one of those shows that when i started buying Anime i felt i had to grab hands down, and im glad i did. I find myself whipping out this site pretty often lol.

Top 3 most reliable Japanese Hobby Shops

Alright as my second post im going to list the safest, most reliable exporter hobby shops in Japan. The ones myself have used on many occasions and never had any major problems with and always receive my order. Their are quite a few bad sites that are known for carrying a lot of bootlegs or simply are just very poor business managers.

Im also going to explain the different shipping methods available through them.

My Top 3 Japanese Export Hobby Shops

A 10 year old site that just in the last few years added a English catering webpage, is the best of the best. Their processing times are short and all your transactions are managed through email messages. You place an order or pre-order on their site and they send you a confirmation email, then a payment request, a payment confirmation, and finally a shipping confirmation, and are very lenient about how fast you pay. They often have small discounts but their prices are almost always 25% less then retail to begin with, being the cheapest of the three.

However be warned they are known for blacklisting and banning people who constantly cancel pre-orders or cause problems for them in general. they also only allow payment through paypal so thats also a problem but only a minor one, since its easy to make a paypal account and its safer then using your credit cards directly. They also are known for on rare occasions packaging things oddly, ive actually heard of them sticking a small inexpensive item in multiple boxes full of packing paper, but they do however package things well normally.

Also be warned they have a lot of business and popular items often sell out the first couple days and in rare cases the first couple hours.

Hobby Search Japan is a large modeling and PVC figure store that is usually very fast at shipping out orders and has a very large stock that often last longer then amiami's and they often become my fall back plan if i miss something their. Hobby Search was actually the first Hobby store i ordered something from.

Their Organization goes according to brand and genre and its easy to find things. They have everything from Anime goods to scale military models and RC models. They often have higher prices then amiami but they also allow you to pay with debit or credit cards directly which is nice.

The only complaint I have with them I have on occasion had them take some time shipping orders, seemingly forgetting to ship them. But this was only once but its worth mentioning since ive never had this with amiami. This is also another store that heavily uses a ton of package paper handling causes your shipping to be more which is normal tho. Sometimes i just wonder if 2 pounds of packing paper is necessary when i ordered one small figure.

They are currently having a 50% off shipping promotion, so now is a good time to test out their services.

Hobby Link Japan is a very well known store and has excellent customer service for the most part, and have big sales several times a year. Theirs currently a 70% off shipping promotion so long as you pay with PayPal, however their stock is pretty ravaged since they also just had a free shipping sale a week ago.

They are the most expensive of the 3 but their site has a shipping estimator which none of the others have, and it just has a ton more options and a large stock of varied goods. I shop with them only when they have sales or the other stores are out of something. They offer everything the others have and more.

But here comes the bad side of Hobby Link Japan, their processing speeds. Ive ordered several times with them and ive never had something ship within the two days. Its always 3 days or more, one actually took more then a week. They are s known for this, but you will eventually always receive your order it just may take a lot longer then with other retailers.

I recommend them as a last resort but still check their site like you would a your main retailer to see what sales and promotions are taking place. They always have some good stuff marked down.

Places to avoid
Never under any circumstances use Toys N Joys, and only use Angolz if their the last store on the planet with what you want. Ive rarely hear anything good about them and iv actually heard of them making a guy wait almost a year for a order to ship. They are both unreliable.

EMS, SAL, FED EX
EMS Simply put is 4 day shipping to anywhere in the world, so long as customs does not hold your package for long amounts of time you will receive it within 3-5 days and its insured in-case its lost. Fed Ex is similar but is faster in transporting goods to the United states and ive actually gotten orders in 3 days consistently.

SAL is cheap, un-insured shipping that will most likely take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month to get to you. It simply works by taking your order and placing it on planes to the states that have some remaining space for cargo. If theirs no room then it sits waiting for the next flight. Once it reaches the states its handed over to the USPS and is carried normally to its destination.

I personally use SAL for everything but the most expensive stuff i don't want to risk loosing in the shipping process. Never use anything but unregistered SAL, at its price your better off going with EMS and all the tracking will do is make your angry as you watch for days without your package leaving Japan.

Also to the US nothing under 200 dollars will be charged with customs fees, so long as your order doesn't cross that line your fine.

What online retailers do you prefer?

What this blog is all about!

I have always had a strong interest in the Japanese culture from their cuisine, culture, entertainment, products, and even their beliefs. This originally formed with my early introduction to Japanese Animation and RPG's like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Pokemon and many others as a kid. I always enjoyed the traces of something foreign and new in these things, the Japanese culture seeping through into the very fabric of the stories and the art styles. Something about it all really grabbed onto me and never let go.

I'm your average guy, i go to college and will be working part time soon. I have my qwerks and problems like everyone else but i want to to give something back to the community online that appreciates Anime, Manga, and Toys. Ive seen some sights reviewing the stuff but many times some series and products i can never find reviews for and i would like to fill that gap. Ive not done a blog before so expect this site to be ever changing and at times maybe a little inconsistent but work with me and help me learn.

Im current a New Media Major at Indiana University. I have knowledge in basic webdesign, flash animation, and many other technical fields.

I plan on largely focusing toy wise on Yamaguchi Revoltechs, Robot Damashii, Gokins, Max Factory Figmas, and many other figures and statues that i can afford and come across that interest me and my blog viewers.

Anime and Manga wise ill cover series released on DVD in the United States as well as fan-subbed series that may or may not make it to the states. I watch a large amount of anime and have large binges on manga so expect that in large bursts while anime is constant. That is unless my viewers begin to complain of course.

Also because i am a college student i will be post some ads on the site to help pay for some of the expenses of ordering this stuff. Its not cheap to ship this stuff to the states, but ill keep them to a minimum. I will stay away from popups those bug me as much as you guys. I should have reviews of several revoltech figures, the Ghost in the Shell Tachikoma Gokin, and the 1/48 scale Gundam up soon.

Stick around i promise the best is yet to come.
